A storm had rolled over us the night before and I don't think we got that great a nights sleep. We awoke to find a fisherman setting up 4 rods in the river in front of us. The sky was calm and bright, but the ground was sodden and the river was flowing fast, bring all sorts of storm debris down with it. Breakfast was coffee, watching black kites stoop and scavenge from the waters surface. Incredible behaviour I've not witnessed before.
We popped in to Libourne for coffee and lunch, and to send some birthday postcards. Lunch was interesting, our grasp of French still leaves much to be desired, and French cuisine even more so. I'll tell you what's absolutely not missing from an egg and avocado baguette.. crab sticks, that's what. Disgusting. Luckily, we very quickly made up for it with a couple of pastries.
Putting that disaster behind us, we headed back out towards the coast to a small town called Pauillac. We made ourselves comfy at a campsite just outside of town and headed off for a walk into the centre down the riverside footpath. The footpath was flanked by a dozen carrolets, accompanied by a series of signs telling the history and evolution of the French fishing equivalent of British allotments.
We walked to the harbour and sat in the sun, soaked up the atmosphere and watched boats come and go. The only distraction was a boat cat throwing up on the jetty.
On our way back we popped in to the local tourist office for some cycling inspiration. They also happened to the be a supplier hub for all of the local wines. We picked up a bottle just in time, they were in the process of closing the shop. Lauren sneaked off and inadvertently got locked behind a security gate. After managing a jailbreak, we wondered off back to the van and had a taste of the Bordeaux region with dinner.
